Check AI Overviews by hand in 5 steps
- Write 10 to 20 questions your buyers type into Google, in their words. Mix "what is", "how to", "best" and "vs" questions.
- Search signed out in a private window, with the country and language your buyers use. Note the date, device and location.
- Open the overview's sources. Expand "Show more" and the source cards. Record every domain and the exact URL, if it is yours.
- Mark each question: no overview shown, overview without you, you mentioned, or your page cited.
- Repeat on the same day next week before you change anything. Overviews vary, so one search is not a baseline.

Why an overview leaves your site out
- The page does not rank for the question. Overviews mostly draw on pages that already rank. Check the page in Search Console first.
- The answer is buried. The first lines of the page should answer the question; see the direct answer block.
- Facts are hard to verify. Sourced numbers and dates are easier to cite; see fact sourcing.
- Google cannot render the content. Content that appears only after JavaScript runs is often missed; see JavaScript-only evidence.

Can I check Google AI Overviews for free?
By hand, yes: search the question signed out in a private window and open the overview's sources. RankEcho's free audit does not include Google AI Overviews. Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic?
Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI features inside the normal Web search results, and Google added a separate generative AI performance report in 2026. Neither tells you which question showed an overview or whether your page was one of its sources.
Why does the AI Overview look different when I search again?
Google decides per search whether to show an overview and which sources to use. Location, language, device and the exact wording change the result, so record those every time you check.
What happens when no AI Overview appears?
Google AI Overviews is reported only when an overview is shown and retrievable; otherwise that cell is marked skipped/unavailable rather than counted as a citation miss. A missing overview is not the same as an overview that left you out.
How do I get cited in AI Overviews?
