# Surfer editor and tracker worksheet

Decide whether to retain your editor, replace your tracker or change both. Keep every payable subscription and required task in the comparison. Use the editable worksheet to build a complete first-year budget, then consult the guide and its four fictional cost records.

Shortlist Frase when you want content production and AI monitoring together, Peec AI when analytics is the main buying task, and RankEcho when you need reviewed page fixes and later observations. Keep Surfer in the comparison: it now offers a separate AI Search Analytics package as well as combined content plans. Decide which editorial work you will retain before treating a lower tracker price as a lower total cost.

## Your editable worksheet

Map the work you need, retain every payable subscription, and compare the same first-year scope. The worksheet is usable without a signup.

```text
SURFER ALTERNATIVES: EDITOR + TRACKER WORKSHEET — v1.0
Decision owner / review date / renewal date:
One representative page and buyer question:
1. Decide what must stay
Editorial work: research, brief, draft, optimization, review and export.
Monitoring work: exact prompts, models, countries, cadence, citations and history.
Replace the editor / replace the tracker / replace both / keep current tools:
Requirements we must retain, and the demonstration that verifies each:
Current subscriptions and commitments we will actually cancel:
Subscriptions, people and manual steps we will keep:
2. Compare the same workload
Sites / brands / seats:
New articles per month; existing pages refreshed; required integrations:
Document or article allowance; its reset period; generation/revision limits:
Prompt list/version; exact engine or search surface; language and location:
Daily/weekly schedule; number of samples; failed-response treatment:
History and export format needed by our reporting process:
Approval and publication owner; evidence of one successful handoff:
3. Record all first-year charges in one currency
Line ID | Subscription or fee | Amount or UNKNOWN | Monthly / annual / once | Editing / monitoring / neither | Quote/date
__ | Retained editor | __ | __ | __ | __
__ | New tracker or combined suite | __ | __ | __ | __
__ | Required content, seat, model or domain add-on | __ | __ | __ | __
__ | Setup, migration or onboarding | __ | once | __ | __
__ | Overlapping subscription commitment | __ | __ | __ | __
For a monthly amount, budget 12 payments at the recorded price.
For an annual amount, enter the full annual invoice, not its monthly equivalent.
Count a one-time fee once. List an unknown amount explicitly; never enter zero for it.
Use a separate line for each payable fee; do not count a bundled entitlement twice.
Known first-year subtotal:
Unpriced lines:
Complete first-year total, or UNKNOWN:
Required editorial/monitoring work with no retained owner:
Taxes, usage changes, foreign exchange and internal labor assumptions (outside the simple subtotal unless explicitly entered):
4. Inspect the outputs before choosing
Editorial record: approved facts, changed text, usability and export.
Observation record: dated answer, brand mention, cited URL and collection settings.
Business record: qualified visit, signup and paid conversion, with attribution limits.
Do not treat a higher content score as a measured search or revenue outcome.
5. Resolve the decision
Missing required work: restore its owner/capability before comparing the complete options.
Missing quote: complete pricing; the known subtotal is not the total.
Complete record: assess fit and commercial terms; this is not an automatic purchase recommendation.
Chosen configuration and reasons:
Pilot acceptance, archive location and new monitoring-series start:
Next review date:
This is a manual worksheet. It does not fetch quotes, verify capability, connect vendor accounts, import history or execute a purchase.
The four worked budgets below are fictional arithmetic examples, not vendor quotes or measured savings.
## Which Surfer alternatives fit your job?
An editor helps people change content. A tracker collects observations about answers. A combined platform may do both, but a replacement only needs to own the work you actually intend to move. The difficult decision is often whether your current writers still need the incumbent editor after the analytics subscription changes.
This September 12, 2026 comparison is published by RankEcho and based on primary vendor pages plus RankEcho's product source. We did not run vendor accounts, compare writing quality or test migrations. The shortlist reflects editorial fit judgments, not measured performance scores or guaranteed search results.
| Option | Evaluate when | Keep explicit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Surfer: keep or change package | Your editorial workflow works and the monitoring package is the main question | Standalone analytics and combined plans have different allowances |
| Frase | You want content production and monitoring in one purchase | Required sites, seats, engines and publishing controls |
| Peec AI | The buying decision centers on AI-search analytics | Which editor, content process and subscriptions remain |
| RankEcho | The recurring task is a bounded page fix followed by observation | Existing editorial/CMS ownership and any full-page content add-on |
## What changed in Surfer's current plan structure?
The reviewed annual-billed cards show AI Search Analytics at $82 per month with 50 daily prompts; Standard at $99 with 25 weekly prompts; and Pro at $182 with 50 daily prompts. Standard and Pro each list 360 documents. The FAQ says annual credits reset yearly and annual subscriptions are paid upfront. Do not read 360 as a monthly document allowance.
This makes a blanket claim that Surfer tracking always requires buying its content bundle misleading. Compare the analytics package with the combined plan against your own workload, then confirm the selected currency and entitlement at purchase. A team's legacy renewal terms may differ from a new public offer.
Surfer's AI Tracker page lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It describes cited-source inspection and competitor observations, and distinguishes Standard's ChatGPT scope from broader plans. Require the exact search surface and collection settings you need; a product's overall engine list is not every plan's entitlement.
## How do Frase, Peec and RankEcho compare?
Frase Starter lists $49 month to month or $39 per month billed yearly, one seat/site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages monthly. Its table lists 50 AI Visibility prompts for ChatGPT and Google AI. Professional lists $129 monthly or $103 annual-billed, three seats, five sites and Perplexity coverage. Confirm what the vendor's Google AI label collects before matching it to another tool's surface.
Frase also distinguishes its Google-focused Content Guard repair workflow from AI Visibility monitoring. Its publishing and approval settings deserve their own demonstration. The presence of both features does not mean every observed AI mention gap automatically triggers a content repair.
Peec's Starter scope lists 50 prompts, three selected models, daily tracking, unlimited users and one project; extra models are available separately. Its pricing page also describes recommended and agent actions, so it should not be reduced to a read-only dashboard. Verify which actions satisfy your actual editing requirements, obtain the selected package amount, and include any editor you keep in the budget.
RankEcho base plans are $49, $149 and $399 monthly. They support the Find, Fix and Prove workflow, with plan-specific domains, prompts and seats. Full-page writing/refreshing is separate: Content Starter adds $99 for 10 pieces monthly and requires a paid base plan. A piece is 1,500 generated words, rounded up; a long article can consume more than one piece.
RankEcho is relevant when the deliverable is an inspectable page-change proposal and a later observation record. Do not treat that as demonstrated equivalence to Surfer's Content Editor, a native Surfer history importer or automatic CMS publication. Inspect the sample against one real page before deciding whether the narrower workflow meets your needs.
## What does a complete first-year budget look like?
Use one currency and list each payable charge once. Multiply a monthly price by 12 for a fixed-price annual budget, enter a full annual invoice once, and add setup fees once. Include retained subscriptions and any overlapping commitment. This is a planning total under stated assumptions, not a claim that a monthly contract requires 12 payments or that prices cannot change.
These four fictional records were calculated locally using the worksheet's rules. All require both editing and monitoring. Their amounts are invented to show the decision, not assigned to any vendor. The unknown quote remains unknown, and the cheap tracker-only record retains its missing-editor warning.
| Fictional configuration | Calculation | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Combined annual plan | $2,160 annual + $100 setup = $2,260 | Complete price/work record under the stated assumptions |
| Retained editor + new tracker | 12 × ($80 + $70) + $100 setup = $1,900 | Both subscriptions included; assess fit before choosing |
| Tracker quote missing | 12 × $80 = $960 known; tracker amount unknown | Total unknown; complete pricing |
| Editor accidentally dropped | 12 × $70 = $840 | Amount known, required editing absent; restore that work |
## What should you test besides the subscription price?
Give each shortlisted configuration the same owned page, approved facts and editorial task. Ask a writer to produce the required change and a reviewer to inspect it. Record the time and handoffs in your own evaluation, but do not import an assumed productivity saving from a pricing card. Check the export or CMS destination that your team actually uses.
Test monitoring with the same questions, language, location and exact search surfaces. Inspect a dated answer and its cited URLs. Ask what happens when collection fails, how many samples support an aggregate, and whether historical answers can be exported. A label such as daily does not explain every sampling or failure rule.
Keep three separate records: the editorial change, the observed answer and the business result. A content score can guide revision; it is not itself an observed ranking, citation, visit or sale. Do not combine proprietary scores into one cross-vendor leaderboard, or call a higher score proof that a rewrite caused an outcome.
For example, a team might prefer its existing editor but need a different monitoring geography. That supports a split-stack evaluation. Another team might need to reduce manual content handoffs. That supports testing a combined workflow. Neither decision follows from prompt count alone.
- [Separate citations, visits and conversions](https://rankecho.io/resources/prove/citation-to-session-to-conversion)
## When should you keep Surfer instead of switching?
Keep the incumbent in the shortlist when its workflow already completes the required job and the new option has not demonstrated a material advantage for your team. Changing only the package, lowering unused scope, or keeping the editor alongside a different tracker can be reasonable outcomes. A comparison should leave those choices open.
Before cancellation, identify the drafts, briefs and observation history you need to retain and verify an export you can read. Record renewal timing and migration labor. If monitoring settings or the collection provider change, preserve the old archive and start a new series; do not splice different tools' scores into a continuous improvement claim.
Choose only after missing work and unpriced requirements are resolved. The worksheet checks whether the decision record is complete; your team still judges output usefulness, commercial terms and operational fit. Revisit the choice after a defined pilot, with adverse and no-change observations retained.
## What should you inspect in RankEcho first?
Open the sample fix and ask whether that proposal is the deliverable your team needs each month. Follow its review and implementation handoff, then check the base plan's domain, seat and prompt limits. Add full-page production to the budget only when that separate workflow is required.
Free audits check Perplexity and Gemini once per prompt. Paid and trialing accounts add ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI Overviews when configured for the account, for up to 5 engines. RankEcho does not currently run Microsoft Copilot checks.
The sample is fictional. The Proof Loop records dated observations and does not establish that a particular edit caused a search result. Keep your publication owner and any retained editorial subscription explicit so the proposed configuration can actually complete the work.
## Does Surfer AI tracking always require a content bundle?
No. The reviewed current pricing includes a separate AI Search Analytics package. Compare its exact allowance and billing terms with the combined plans before choosing.
## Is the lowest tracker price the cheapest Surfer alternative?
Only if the resulting configuration still completes your required work. Add retained editing, required models or seats, setup and overlapping commitments; keep unknown quotes unresolved.
## Does a higher content score show better AI visibility?
A score and an observed answer are different records. Evaluate the edited page and then inspect dated answer evidence; track visits and paid conversion separately.
## Can RankEcho replace my entire content editor?
This comparison does not establish full editor equivalence. RankEcho's bounded Fix workflow and separate full-page content add-on should be evaluated against the exact editorial task and publishing handoff you need.
